Dot-Com Builder: Overview of UDDI This article describes the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) standard, an evolving standard for describing, publishing, and finding Web services that a business provides. In short, UDDI is a specification for a distributed registry of information on Web services. I'll introduce the capabilities that these registries add to the WWW, and how they can be used.

Dot-Com Builder: Web Services The concept of Web services marks the latest in the development of ever more modular and distributed computing. The industry has embraced it as the next big thing despite its technical immaturity. What does this mean to developers? It means you can become an early adopter, hone your skills, and contribute to its evolution.

XForms 1.0 XForms 1.0
W3C Working Draft 07 December
posted by J Slave 12/28/2001

XML and Forms [December 10, 2001] W3C Publishes Updated XForms 1.0 Working Draft Specification. The W3C XForms Working Group has issued a new version of the XForms 1.0 working draft specification, incorporating "new material agreed upon at the Mountain View face-to-face meeting and ongoing feedback from the general public." The working group plans to publish a 'last call' working draft after evaluation of review comments on the current draft. 'XForms' is W3C's name for "a specification of Web forms that can be used with a wide variety of platforms including desktop computers, hand helds, information appliances, and even paper. The current design of Web forms doesn't separate the purpose from the presentation of a form. XForms, in contrast, are comprised of separate sections that describe what the form does, and how the form looks. This allows for flexible presentation options, including classic XHTML forms, to be attached to an XML form definition. The XForms User Interface provides a standard set of visual controls that are targeted toward replacing today's XHTML form controls. These form controls are directly usable inside XHTML and other XML documents, like SVG. An important concept in XForms is that forms collect data, which is expressed as XML instance data; workflow, auto-fill, and pre-fill form applications are supported through the use of collected instance data."

Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL) "XFDL, the world's first open protocol for secure, legally-binding XML documents, is garnering support and endorsement from industry vendors. XFDL provides a key component of business-to-business e-commerce solutions: the ability to securely send and receive legally-binding XML documents. The importance of XFDL as an e-commerce language comes largely from its ability to encapsulate presentation, data, computational logic, and business semantics, such as those defined by CBL, cXML, or BizTalk, in a single XML document. This document can then be digitally signed and stored to provide non-repudiation, enabling high-value, binding e-commerce transactions today." [from the Home Page]

The W3C has acknowledged receipt of a two-part submission from JetForm Corporation on the topic of XML Forms Architecture. Both documents are edited by Gavin McKenzie. XML Forms Architecture (XFA) "provides for the specific requirements of electronic forms and the applications that use them. XFA addresses the needs of organizations to securely capture, present, move, process, output and print information associated with electronic forms." The submission "describes an XML tagset for electronic forms with support for graphics, templates, calculations, validation, scripting, picture clauses, sequencing, and digital signatures. Some aspects of the submission duplicate existing work by W3C: the box model (W3C's style sheet activity), graphics (W3C's work on scalable vector graphics), linking (W3C's work on XML Linking). The details for signed forms relate to new work at W3C on signed XML. Work on data types for XML Schemas may be relevant to the canonical representation of form values such as dates." XFA "clearly distinguishes between the two stages via the following terminology, as detailed in [the submissions]: (1) Form -- what the form consumer works with (2) Template -- what the form designer creates." The document "XFA-Template" [XFA-Template Version 1.0] describes the open and extensible modeling of secure forms with high fidelity composition, automated calculation and validation, pluggable user-interface components, and flexible data handling. The second document "XFA-Fo

X-Smiles.org X-Smiles is a Java based XML browser. It is intended for both desktop use and embedded network devices and to support multimedia services.
The main advantage of the X-Smiles browser is that it supports several XML related specifications and is still suitable for embedded devices supporting the Java environment.
X-Smiles is not an HTML browser, though in the future it may support XHTML.

Who Trusts the Trustees? Trusted Security Providers in the Java Cryptography Extension 1.2.1 In a reasonable world, the JDK would contain a standard java.crypto package as part of the core API. Regrettably, U.S. export laws prohibit the export of cryptographic software without special permission. The regulations that implement these laws have been loosened recently, but the laws are still in place. Therefore, Java's security classes are divided between the java.security and javax.crypto packages. The latter must be downloaded separately from the JDK as part of the Java Cryptography Extension in order to comply with U.S. law. Before you can download it, you have to fill out a form promising you're a resident of the United States or Canada. However, several third party implementations of the JCE have been written outside the boundaries of the United States and beyond the control of U.S. law, including at least one open source package, Cryptix. These implementations are available around the globe to anybody who wants them. Sun and the U.S. government have no control over or involvement in the development of these packages. At least until now.

A lightweight cryptography API in Java.
A provider for the JCE and JCA.
A clean room implementation of the JCE 1.2.1.
Generators for Version 1 and Version 3 X.509 certificates and PKCS12 files.
A signed jar version suitable for JDK 1.4 (Beta) and the Sun JCE.
The lightweight API works with everything from the J2ME to the JDK 1.3

Exchanging Files If you want to electronically send an important document, such as a contract, to someone else, it is a good idea to digitally "sign" the document, so that the recipient has a way of checking that the document indeed came from you and was not altered in transit.
This lesson illustrates the use of security-related tools for the exchange of an important document, in this case a contract. You first pretend that you are the contract sender, Stan Smith. This lesson shows the steps Stan would use to put the contract in a JAR file, sign it, and export the public key certificate for the public key corresponding to the private key used to sign the JAR file.
Then you pretend that you are Ruth, who has received the signed JAR file and the certificate. You'll use keytool to import the certificate into Ruth's keystore in an entry aliased by stan, and the jarsigner tool to verify the signature.

API and Tools Use for Secure Code and File Exchanges This lesson contains overview information to help you understand why digital signatures, certificates, and keystores are needed. The lesson also compares use of the tools versus the JDK Security API with respect to generating signatures.

Amazon Honor System The Amazon Honor System is a safe and easy way for you to support your favorite Web sites and to buy digital content on the Web. Amazon.com has successfully completed hundreds of millions of online transactions and has more than 25 million customers. Now, the Amazon Honor System lets you use Amazon.com payment technology to make payments to Web sites as small as $1.00.
Web sites use the Amazon Honor System to collect voluntary payments from their users and to accept payment for digital content. In many cases, the Honor System is the only way a Web site can economically collect small payments. In others, the Honor System allows the Web site to raise money for continued operations without resorting to intrusive banner advertisements.

Welcome to Original Reusable Objects, a Savarese.Org Project Thousands of Java developers have been using ORO Software since 1997. Yet many developers have eschewed the software for lack of easy access to the source code, despite the liberal binary license which allowed use of the software for almost all development purposes. Now, it has been decided to release the source code for the benefit of the Java development community.

NetComponents TM provides one-stop shopping for all your IETF protocol Java programming needs. Access FTP servers from your Java applications, send email from your Java applets, or automate access to Telnet accessible resources.

OROMatcher TM 1.0 is perhaps the most comprehensive regular expression package available for Java. OROMatcher TM is 100% compatible with Perl5 regular expressions and also supports the processing of InputStreams. Unlike other commercial regular expression packages for Java, the license to use OROMatcher TM for software development purposes is FREE. So try it out, and add the power of regular expressions to your Java programs.
